Healing Reaction

Many people know that Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) aims to treat illness by addressing its root cause. Indeed, experienced TCM practitioners focus on identifying the underlying pattern and origin of a disease in order to achieve lasting healing rather than simply relieving symptoms.

However, one question is often overlooked: what happens to the pathogens or imbalances that are being eliminated when the root cause is treated?

The human body is an intelligent and self-regulating system. When health begins to improve, the body may naturally expel substances or pathogenic factors that do not belong there. During this process, some temporary discomfort may occur.

The body can eliminate these factors through different pathways depending on the individual and the condition being treated, including the skin, respiratory tract, digestive system, and urinary system. As a result, various healing reactions may occur. Common examples include headaches, dizziness, skin itching or rashes, cough, sore throat, increased bowel movements, or mild diarrhea.

These reactions are usually temporary. In mild cases, they may last only a few days. In people with chronic health conditions, healing reactions may occur intermittently over a longer period as the body gradually restores balance.

Clinical experience suggests that individuals who are physically weak or who have used cold or cooling medications for a long time may experience stronger healing reactions during treatment.

Naturally, most people prefer to avoid pain and discomfort. When symptoms appear, it is common to want immediate relief and a quick return to normal. As a result, some people may stop their treatment prematurely or take additional medications to suppress the symptoms. In some cases, this may interfere with the body's natural healing process.

Therefore, if you experience temporary discomfort while taking Chinese herbal medicine, it is important not to panic. Consult your TCM practitioner to discuss your symptoms and determine whether they are related to the treatment. Your practitioner can help you manage any discomfort while ensuring that the treatment remains appropriate and effective.

By supporting the body's natural healing processes and restoring the smooth flow of Qi and Blood, TCM seeks to address the root cause of illness and promote long-term health and well-being.
